Communication Networks: Principles and Practice

By
Sumit Kasera, Nishit Narang and Sumita Narang

There are a plethora of books on networking in today's market. Almost all of these books focus on technologies, thereby ignoring the concepts behind them. Very few books are available that provide the basic concepts, and then relate these concepts to applications in real technologies.

This book is an introductory text to networking concepts. However, in a novel approach adopted by the authors, the book is organized in a manner such that each chapter first provides details of a particular aspect of communication networks and then elaborates how the concept applies to a contemporary networking technology like TCP/IP, Ethernet, ATM, GSM, 3G/UMTS Mobile Network and ISDN networks.

Using this approach, the book covers the most important topics of communications, networking, and computer networks, in three parts:
  • Introductory Concepts (including Connection-oriented/Connection less services, Layered Architecture and OSI model, Transfer modes, and Network Toplogy)
  • Core Concepts (including Transmission, Data Link Functions, Briding, Switching, Addressing, Signalling and Routing)
  • Advance Concepts (including Traffic Management, Network Management and Security Management)
With this organization and coverage, the book seeks to fulfill the needs of first-time readers, students and networking engineers.
